You’ve probably heard of diffusers before and dismissed them as some hocus pocus magic for hippies wanting to connect with the universe. Or maybe you’ve heard they fix everything from congestion to skin health and are basically a cure-all.
But, let’s take stock for a moment. Diffusers aren’t your red pill into wonderland! However, they have been proven to be great for the mind.
What I want you to take away from reading this is who diffusers are really for. They are for busy people, stressed people, people with goals, 9-5 workers, shift-workers, students and busy mothers and dads.
Ok, so you catch my drift – they are for EVERYONE because we all have this (not so) little thing between our ears called a BRAIN that we all hopefully love to take care of.
So, what is a diffuser exactly?
Diffusers are home devices that turn water and essential oils into a mist for the mind. How can a mist affect your mind, you ask? It might sound kind of crazy but it isn’t. Ancient folk used to diffuse essential oils too so surely, we can’t all be wrong!
Rest assured, I’m about to drop some science on you, not some new-age mumbo jumbo so brace yourselves.
Here’s the science
The olfactory system (your sense of smell) is incredibly important to how we experience life. This is because it works in conjunction with the limbic system of the brain, or as it’s sometimes referred to as the emotional centre of the brain.
The emotional brain is the origin of pleasure, anger, fear and anxiety. Smell is the only one of the five senses that has a direct link to it. In fact, the connection is so strong between the olfactory system and the limbic system that our emotions are triggered before we are consciously aware of a smell.

The limbic system also includes the hippocampus for long-term memory which differs from person to person. This means that different scent profiles may impact everyone slightly differently, depending on whether that scent can be associated with any significant life event.
But, in general there are specific profiles for each essential oil aroma, so they mostly make us all feel a similar way.
It’s not just for the feels
I know I used the word feelings and there’s some people out there who don’t like to talk or read about that. But let’s look at it this way: using a diffuser can improve focus and mental clarity. Put your hand up if you could benefit from more focus? Yep, everyone I’d say.
We’re surrounded by a million distractions and demands every single day. Make more money, be more beautiful, be smarter, be successful, be everything to everyone. It’s a bit exhausting!
Just for a moment, imagine what each day would look like if you had a clearer, more focused mind. It would look something like this:
- Getting out of bed without hitting the snooze button
- Staying calm when the red light takes a little too long to turn green
- Remaining polite with the barista when you get the wrong coffee order
- Finishing one task before moving on to the next

- Impressing the head honchos at work with big ideas like it ain’t no thang
- Falling asleep easily, without torturing yourself with anxious thoughts

Diffusers are the perfect way to bring a bit of nature into your home. Why is this important? Well, having a connection to nature is a reliable way of boosting mental well-being thanks to the feelings of awe that natural beauty elicits from us.
Exposure to elements of nature, like scents, can restore mental energy, provide relief from a stressed mental state, calm the mind and sharpen thinking.
